Search engine optimisation is one of those things that circles around like a wild cat trying to steal the chicken you are cooking on your camp fire.
Well, perhaps not, but it is nevertheless one of those things that many of us have heard of and think well maybe we ought to do something about, but then don’t, possibly because we don’t quite understand what it is all about.
If you know, and you’ve had it done, fine, there’s nothing more that I can add. But if not…
SEO is about making sure that your website ends up as high as possible in the search engines. So that if someone types, “Most effective motivation method for difficult teenagers” into Google, and you sell a motivational product, then your website pops up as near the top as possible.
The problem is, of course, that not everyone can be on the front page.
Do a Google search with the UK only button on, for the single word “schools” and you get 44 million or so hits. That’s 4.5 million pages.
Of course, results change day by day but on the day I am writing to you, our own schools website (The Education News and Schools Directory www.schools.co.uk) comes up on the first page of the 4.5 million.
And to show that we don’t just rely on a neat website address to ensure that we can undertake search engine optimisation, if you type in the phrase Arsenal News into Google without clicking on the UK button, you will probably see around 34 million entries.
Again, results can change but today, as I write this, at the foot of the first page is a list of three blogs, the top one of which is a link to our site Untold Arsenal (www.blog.emiratesstadium.info) and half way down the second page is the main link to our site.
That does not mean that each and every time we are given a project to raise a company’s website profile that we can do it. And indeed on any day for any particular search phrase there are probably a dozen other companies around the world working for other companies in the same way.
What we do with search engine optimisation however is slightly different from other firms. We work in a way that we believe will not only help today, but for months and years to come. That is to say, we don’t use technical tricks which, in due course, Google will become aware of, and so discount. Rather we work on a system that is bound to be of value for as long as there are search engines. We build up a lot of text with a lot of key words that will ensure Google and other search engines find you.
Of course, we are not averse to manipulations as well – we made the phrase “Arsenal news” a key feature of the site when we checked which words people most often search for, for example. But our central approach is something that will work and work.
The other benefit you get from search engine optimisation of this type is that as a website rises up the rankings, so it gathers more readers. As it gathers more readers, so it rises, and so on.
